Description

Book Synopsis

Core lessons and studio exercises for the new generation of creatives entering a networked, porous economy of "multi-hyphenates"

Today, designers now operate with unprecedented access to the tools of production, distribution and digital media. The result is a renewed engagement with materials, processes, audiences and scale, and Fine Design offers a guide to this hybrid landscape, where digital and handmade practices inform one another. Drawing on more than 20 years of studio teaching and practice, designer Scott Klinker presents a new framework for thinking through the relations between design, art, craft and industry, while prioritizing experimentation, material intelligence and the designer's own voice. Illustrated with inventive student and alumni work, the book pairs reflective essays with workbook-style exercises that help readers build their own creative tools. Rather than prescribing a single method, it invites designers to explore new scales of production, rethink authorship and approach making with both rigor and flexibility.
American designer and educator Scott Klinker chaired the graduate 3D design program at the renowned Cranbrook Academy of Art as designer-in-residence from 2001 to 2025. In that time, he mentored over 170 graduate design students and curated numerous exhibitions.
