About the Book

This immersive teen novel, set in Central California's moody coast, is both an exploration into family grief and like a warm group hug.

Book Synopsis

An emotional and atmospheric YA story of grief, romance, and the power of creativity-perfect for fans of Sarah Dessen, Jenna Evans Welch, and K. L. Walther.

Wren Ford has come to hate life in her remote beach town up the coast of California. No matter where she turns, whispers drift in from the Pacific, dredging up guilt and grief over her past decisions. She copes by doodling and kissing tourists until she can graduate high school and get out.

When Ty's family takes over the vintage shop next door, Wren wants to hate him. But he has good ideas for ways she can make money off her art. More importantly, he's like a buoy for her little sister, drawing her out of the darkness that washes over their home. So, like a sharp piece of glass being smoothed by the grit and the water, Wren finds herself wearing down under his charm, too.

As her projects fail and grief crests within her family, Wren reads Caleb's letters, left in a green glass bottle in the window. Aching over the honest, raw love that he expresses, her shame flows in and out like the tide. His words pull her under, wave by wave...

Until it becomes too much to tread in.

A perfect gift for teens looking for an immersive read full of yearning and healing.

(no review title)

I am not this book's target demographic. Still, I found myself consistently interested in the story, excited to pick it back up again each day. On the surface, this YA novel seems straightforward. There is no political intrigue, no dystopian overlords, no magical creatures. But it sure is compelling. Rogers doesn't need any sort of gimmick to make this story more interesting; she does that with the characters living a normal life in a normal setting. A breath of fresh air from the books I am used to reading. The reader is simply following Wren, an artistic teenager having to wrestle through the hardest times of her life. The story relies on the characters, making the reader feel like they truly know Wren and her family over the course of these pages. In the end, I - a 36 year old grown man - found myself tearing up in the final moments of this book. It was absolutely worth the journey.
