Description

Book Synopsis

The effects of climate change on the building stock have sparked extensive debate and research in both historic preservation and architecture. Recently, both disciplines have published significant work on the climate crisis, articulating their respective positions and proposed solutions. They have largely done so, however, in isolation from one another: historic preservation has focused on conserving existing buildings, while architecture has focused on new construction. Im Prinzip combines these two approaches. The climate crisis clearly shows that we must bridge the divide between new construction and the preservation of existing buildings by drawing on the expertise of historic preservation to develop sustainable architecture. Bringing together perspectives from a range of disciplines, the volume examines starting points, examples, and practical strategies for retaining existing buildings.

With a foreword by Anh-Linh Ngo and contributions by Friedrich von Borries, Elisabeth Broermann, Sebastian Brünger, Constanze Fuhrmann, Mikala Holme Samsøe, Theresa Keilhacker, Verena Pfeiffer-Kloss, Dana Ratz, Jan Schultheiß, Stefan Simon, Kerstin Stamm, Astrid Swenson, Corinna Tell, Felix Zohlen.

  • Brings architecture and historic preservation together in the context of the climate crisis for the first time

  • Provides a knowledge resource for professionals working in planning, preservation, and design

  • Contains a reference section with key current documents, along with an overview of relevant organizations and networks engaged in the ongoing development and stewardship of the building stock
