In the Studio: Louise Bourgeois - (Hardcover)

Book Synopsis

An elegant and affordable clothbound primer on Bourgeois' singular studio practice

Born in France in 1911 and working in America from 1938 until her death in 2010, Louise Bourgeois created a vast body of work fueled by introspective reality and articulated through recurrent motifs--including body parts, houses and spiders--transforming personal trauma into universal symbols of emotion and memory across a remarkable variety of genres, mediums and materials. In this generously illustrated and accessible guide to Bourgeois' life and work, writer and curator Justin Paton explores how the artist's studio became a site of psychological release and personal transformation. Combining Paton's engaging insights with a timeline of Bourgeois' life and career as well as extensive archival images showcasing Bourgeois' working methods, In the Studio: Louise Bourgeois is an excellent resource for both newcomers and those familiar with her groundbreaking work.
This volume continues Hauser & Wirth Publishers' In the Studio series, which offers intimate looks at the creative processes of major artists, following volumes on Phyllida Barlow, Jack Whitten, Lee Lozano and Takesada Matsutani.
