Book Synopsis

Right now, your brain is selling you a story about who you are, what's true, and what you should believe.

And you're buying it, even when it sabotages your success.

In Inner Propaganda, psychologist Owen Fitzpatrick reveals the internal persuasion system shaping your thoughts, your decisions, and your reality. After decades studying external propaganda, from witnessing first-hand modern influence operations in North Korea, Afghanistan, and Washington D.C., to analyzing the incredible double agent who helped change the outcome of World War II, Fitzpatrick reached a startling conclusion:

The same tactics that sway nations also operate inside each of us.

Your mind has its own propaganda machine. It manufactures certainty, reinforces old narratives, and keeps you loyal to beliefs that no longer serve you. And in an era of infinite information and AI-generated content, these internal distortions intensify--making it nearly impossible to distinguish between genuine insight and manufactured conviction.

But understanding your own propaganda is the key to understanding everyone else's. Once you see how your brain manipulates you, you finally understand why others believe what they believe. As the current media landscape fragments our relationships, this can help you bridge divides rather than deepen them.

To do this, he offers a deceptively simple framework: Feels Right, Fits In, Makes Sense--three forces that explain why ideas take hold, why we cling to them even when they harm us, and how to reshape beliefs that actually support better mental health, clearer decision-making, and stronger leadership.

Fitzpatrick's insights come from deep research and lived experience. Early struggles with mental health set him on a lifelong path to understand how beliefs form and how they can change--a journey that led him to study the science of influence at Harvard and MIT and advise organizations across 33 countries. Through that work, he explains:

Why the inner voice you trust most might be lying to you Why smart leaders make terrible decisions Why teams resist great strategies Why the harder you argue, the more people dig in

Your inner story war never ends.

But now, you can choose which side wins.

Review Quotes

"Owen Fitzpatrick puts his finger on something every great leader eventually learns the hard way: power rests on belief long before it rests on force. Inner Propaganda shows you how to shape belief ethically -- starting with your own -- and it's the playbook these turbulent times demand". --TONY ROBBINS, Philanthropist, Global Businessman, and #1 New York Times Bestselling Author

"Your brain isn't a neutral narrator. It's a double agent that's running influence operations on you around the clock. Inner Propaganda reverse engineers this hidden system, revealing how false stories take hold, why they stick, and how to rewrite them before they silently distort your decisions." --DANIEL H. PINK, #1 New York Times bestselling author of DRIVE and THE POWER OF REGRET

"Inner Propaganda provides something we haven't seen before. It shows us not just how we form and select the beliefs that shape our thinking but, as well, how they take root and dictate our decision-making. Best of all, it provides clear steps for how to take control of these powerful inner accounts and transform them to lead to better life choices." --ROBERT CIALDINI, Author of Influence and Pre-Suasion

"We're very good at spotting bias in other people, but often blind to it in ourselves. That's what makes it so powerful. If you've ever been certain and wrong, Inner Propaganda is the book you didn't know you need." --JONAH BERGER, Bestselling Author of Contagious and The Catalyst

"People think their thoughts are about reality. They're not. They're about the last time they thought the same thought. Inner Propaganda pulls the curtain back on that magic show -- and the moment you can see the trick, you're already free of it." --DR. RICHARD BANDLER, Co-Creator of NLP

"Inner Propaganda makes a crucial argument that the belief systems tearing us apart aren't just imposed from outside, they're constructed from within. As Fitzpatrick teaches you how stories hijack your beliefs, he's demonstrating it in real time. Hard book to put down (which is part of the point)!" --ZOE CHANCE, Bestselling Author of Influence Is Your Superpower

"Before we can influence others, we must understand the stories shaping their thinking. Inner Propaganda exposes the hidden narratives that drive belief and behavior and helps leaders guide hearts and minds with intelligence and empathy." --PHIL M. JONES, Author of Exactly What to Say

"Your brain is a powerful storyteller, and not always a reliable one. Owen Fitzpatrick's Inner Propaganda is a sharp, eye-opening look at the hidden narratives driving our beliefs and the influence they hold over our lives." --HENNA PRYOR, Author of Good Awkward

"Inner Propaganda makes the case that your brain isn't always on your side. Then it goes on to lay out a detailed blueprint for how to turn it into your greatest ally and most powerful advantage. Owen Fitzpatrick has given us the kind of book Robert Cialdini might have written if his interest was in how to influence ourselves rather than other people." --MICHAEL F. SCHEIN, Author of The Hype Handbook

"Leadership is hard. Juggling different realities--stakeholders, shareholders, and teams--is part of the job. The problem is that we don't see the world as it is; we see it as our beliefs require it to be. That single truth is leadership's biggest blind spot. Inner Propaganda cuts straight to the level that actually drives everything: meaning. It exposes the hidden mechanism behind your decisions, your culture, and your results. Owen Fitzpatrick has masterfully laid out a path for leaders pursuing genuine excellence to develop the kind of self-awareness most leaders avoid." --DOV BARON, Architect of the Emotional Source Code and the Anatomy of Meaning, Multi-Bestselling Author, 5x Global Leadership Guru

"If you're a human in the world today, you need this book. This book is a deep dive into what makes you tick, why and how you believe what you do, and how you can influence yourself to change those beliefs to better your life, your work, and your relationships. If you're a leader in the world today, you need this book times two. By learning your own inner propaganda, you'll learn the best way to positively influence those you work with improving work culture, performance, innovation, and engagement." --CAIT DONOVAN, Author of The Match Move and Burnout & Leadership Expert

"Inner Propaganda is the kind of book that makes you stop and question the voice in your own head. Owen Fitzpatrick takes a complex idea--how our beliefs are shaped and manipulated--and makes it both accessible and deeply personal. It's a sharp, thought-provoking read that challenges you to take back control of the stories you believe." --DR. MARSHALL GOLDSMITH, Thinkers50 #1 Executive Coach and New York Times Bestselling Author of The Earned Life, Triggers, and What Got You Here Won't Get You There

"Inner Propaganda is a masterclass in how beliefs shape our behavior, decisions, and leadership. Owen Fitzpatrick brilliantly unpacks the invisible psychological forces that guide what we think is true. If you want to understand why people believe what they believe--and how to lead hearts and minds in an age of misinformation--this book is essential reading!" --HOWIE CHAN, Host of The Influence Anyone Podcast

"Beliefs aren't conclusions. They're constructions--built from emotion, identity, and narrative long before rationality ever enters the room. Owen Fitzpatrick shows you exactly how that construction works, which means you can finally stop being its unwitting architect. Inner Propaganda will change what you think persuasion is--and where it starts." --TAMSEN WEBSTER, Author of SAY WHAT THEY CAN'T UNHEAR
