Description

Book Synopsis

The appeal of the face and what it conveys. Includes both Scheltjens' iconic glass portraits and her marble and glass crush sculptures.

Faces have been Belgian artist Isabelle Scheltjens' fascination ever since she was a girl. It is the face as a canvas for someone's personality that has never ceased to captivate Scheltjens, as well as the duality between the apparent perfection of a face from afar and the beautiful imperfect reality of a face up close. The artist started her practice making mosaic-like portraits from small fused pieces of glass, increasing her mastery of color theory along the way. More recently, Isabelle Scheltjens has taken to creating sculptures in glass crush and marble as well. These sculptures play with elongation and proportion, offering a distorted and unexpected new perspective on 'the face'. Isabelle Scheltjens, a book celebrating a decade of artistic growth and merit, illustrates the emotional charge of the artist's works and the appeal of Scheltjens' work as it travels to homes in every corner of the world.
