Dr. Robert Chudinski, an idealistic academic, is fresh out of his doctoral program, when he accepts a position at Eastern Wisconsin University. Dr. Chudinski believes he will finally have the opportunity to change the world "one student at a time." He quickly learns why everyone calls it EW-U.

Departments at Eastern Wisconsin are openly at war with each other. Students have sex in class. Somebody keeps stealing office furniture. And there's a mysterious prankster who pulls potentially fatal practical jokes. To make matters worse, Rob's department chair has vowed to ruin his career.

Unable to leave because he was tricked into buying a house nobody else would possibly want, young Dr. Chudinski must find a way to keep his job-and a promise he made to a dying woman.
