Description

About the Book

Design tools are not neutral instruments ‒ they shape what we can create. A practical framework reveals how their hidden influences affect creative work.

Book Synopsis

Are design tools really neutral ‒ or do they quietly shape what we create? Bridging design theory and the philosophy of technology, Steffen Mitschelen reveals how tools actively influence creative thinking, design processes, and final outcomes. Moving beyond conventional software-centered perspectives, his study introduces a powerful framework for understanding the hidden agency of creative media. At its core is the innovative »Meta-Tool« method, which uses simple everyday materials to expose the mechanisms through which tools guide design. Based on eight hands-on workshops with design students, the volume uncovers 20 recurring patterns that open new paths for experimentation, reflection, and creative discovery.

Review Quotes

»The book responds to a twofold research gap: on the one hand, design theory lacks systematic reflections on the material tools of designing; on the other hand, the philosophy of technology does not provide a comprehensive, contemporary theory that can be applied to today's design landscape. [This work] develops a coherent research and teaching program from this, convincingly intertwining theoretical modeling, experimental practice, and pedagogical approach.«-- "Prof. Dr. Georg Trogemann, Academy of Media Arts Cologne"

About the Author

Steffen Mitschelen, born in 1990, is a design researcher and interface designer and works as a user-experience (UX) designer at SAP SE. His research interests focus on critical approaches to digital technologies and user interfaces and are complemented by hands-on work with diverse tools and materials. His transdisciplinary background enables him to integrate theoretical and practical perspectives in his work. In 2017, he began his doctoral research at the Department of Experimental Informatics at Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln. This work not only deepened his theoretical focus but also solidified his teaching experience by conducting workshops at various design and art universities across Germany.
