Description

Book Synopsis

The first international monograph exploring the bold, visionary world of Oswaldo Vigas--where Latin American modernism meets ancestral memory, magic, and metamorphosis.

This publication explores the transformative art of Oswaldo Vigas (1923-2014), one of Latin America's most influential artists. Known for his treatment of the human figure, Vigas reinterpreted ancient symbols through a modernist lens, delving into themes of identity, transformation, and spirituality.

The book features essays by art historians and a collection of images from private collections and museums, many of which have never been published before. It traces Vigas's evolution, examining his surrealist experimentation, interest in pre-Columbian art, and later works exploring power, mythology, and the human condition.

Drawing from archival materials and interviews, this volume offers an overview of Vigas's life, from his early years in Venezuela to his time in Paris, where he engaged with the European avant-garde. The book highlights his global impact on modern art, solidifying his place in Latin American and international art movements.
