About the Book

The result of intensive research and personal commitment, this monograph offers a unique perspective on how people with disabilities are perceived in Burundi.

Book Synopsis

The result of intensive research and personal commitment, this monograph offers a unique perspective on how people with disabilities are perceived in Burundi. Through in-depth analysis, the work explores how collectivist culture, history, and local beliefs shape views on disability, giving voice to narratives often absent from academic discourse. Through in-depth analysis, it explores how collectivist culture, history, and local beliefs shape understandings of disability, giving voice to narratives that are often absent from academic discourse.

The author carefully foregrounds the voices of Burundians--particularly parents, teachers, and children. Drawing on constructivist grounded theory, the book provides a vivid account of social stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination, offering insight into the everyday challenges faced by people with disabilities in Burundi.

This book is not merely an academic study but, above all, an ethical commitment to disseminating knowledge and challenging social exclusion. For readers seeking a fresh, cross-cultural perspective on disability and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that shape its social perception, this monograph offers valuable insight into the lived realities of people with disabilities in Burundi.

Review Quotes

My overall assessment is that the manuscript is well researched and documented and that it qualifies as an intercultural study of disability. The researcher has paid a lot of attention to reviewing the available literature on social and cultural aspects of disability in the African context.--Patrick Devlieger, Professor Emeritus at KU Leuven (Belgium)
