Book Synopsis

In the most candid and compelling sports memoir since Andre Agassi's riveting bestseller Open, former San Francisco 49er, Super Bowl champion, NFL MVP, and Hall of Famer Steve Young gives readers an unprecedented and stunning inside look at what it takes to become a super-elite professional quarterback.

Steve Young produced some of the most memorable moments in NFL history. But his most impressive victories have been deeply personal ones that were won when no one was watching. His remarkably revealing memoir is the story of a Mormon boy with a 4.0 GPA, a photographic memory, and a severe case of separation anxiety.

As an eighth-string quarterback at Brigham Young University, it was doubtful that he would ever see any playing time. But Young became an All-American, finished second in the Heisman voting, and was the top draft choice out of college. Then, after signing the largest contract in sports history, anxiety nearly drove him to walk away from football completely.

In short, Young's quest in life was always about grit. Now, he shares the experience of being inside his helmet while he faces down his toughest adversaries, both on and off the field.

"This book is gold."--Peter King

"Intense."--San Francisco Chronicle

"Steve Young is a hero of mine, and his story is a source of inspiration for me. His perseverance, intelligence, and, most of all, grace under pressure, NFL-style, make this book a fascinating read. Thanks, Steve, for sharing your story with one of your biggest fans!"--Tom Brady

Review Quotes

"Steve Young is a hero of mine, and his story is a source of inspiration for me. His perseverance, intelligence and most of all, grace under pressure NFL-style, makes this book a fascinating read. Thanks Steve for sharing your story with one of your biggest fans!" - Tom Brady "All football fans know what a tremendously talented and successful quarterback Steve Young was in his NFL career. But what they don't know about are the challenges and personal obstacles Steve had to overcome to make his dreams come true. This is a most exciting and compelling story." - Roger Staubach "There has never been a QB like Steve Young, and there has never been a football memoir quite like QB: A Life. Young's battles with anxiety make you forget you are reading about a Hall of Famer, and make you root for him at every turn. This is a revealing, honest, compelling book that any fan will enjoy." -- Michael Rosenberg, Senior Writer, Sports Illustrated "Steve was not just another Hall of Fame QB - he was extraordinary in every facet of life. His passion, preparation, and attention to detail is so vivid you feel as though this "QB" has put you right in the middle of a huddle of life. I've never read a football book with more honesty and integrity - it's typical Steve. What a quarterback! What a man!" -- Jim Nantz, CBS Sports "Steve Young's scrambling, pinpoint passing, and perseverance helped make him an NFL Hall of Fame quarterback. He wowed us every Sunday. Until reading QB, though, I had no idea about the personal mountains he had to climb to make his dreams come true. This is a most memorable story for all fans." - Chris Berman, ESPN "Steve Young's QB: My Life Behind the Spiral reads like he used to play: with fearlessness, creativity and accomplishment. This is not a typical, self-serving athlete autobiography. Young is unflinchingly honest in detailing his battles with anxiety, serving as role model for far more than just staring down a fourth quarter blitz. It's a remarkable read." --Dan Wetzel, National Columnist, Yahoo! Sports "This book is a terrific read." --Jim Rome "I couldn't put it down." --Brian Kilmeade "The rare sports book in which the heretofore pristine hero admits to some legitimate human scars. I covered Young a lot in my life, and I never knew so much of what he went through. [This] book is gold." --Peter King "A candidly told, compelling, inspiring story that will enthrall even those who are not ardent football fans. It takes readers right into the huddle. The reader absorbs the sweat and pain, the exhilaration and tension." --San Jose Mercury News "Details his great football life ...a remarkable story. An amazing saga." --Mike Francesa "Steve Young could endure hellacious on-field beatings, but one opponent made him weepy, nauseous and reluctant to get out of bed: anxiety...Even after he was voted the NFL's MVP, Young's performance anxiety spiked to nearly crushing levels, making him wonder if he'd survive certain seasons as he tried to replace Joe Montana....Young's gift for football, what he was seemingly made to do, could also make him physically ill...He is free [now], but realizes others are in the midst of the type of crisis he endured 23 years ago...For those, ...his book is a gift from someone who truly understands." --Eric Branch, San Francisco Chronicle "It would be just about impossible to make up Young's story of going from an eighth-string quarterback as a BYU freshman to the MVP of the NFL and then a first-ballot Hall of Famer. His book covers that football journey thoroughly, while also hitting all the life in between....QB succeeds in capturing a remarkable life, in and out of football." - Kurt Kragthorpe, The Salt Lake Tribune
