About the Book
Sam -- redheaded, orphaned, temperamental -- is sent to Johnson "Blue Gables" Juvenile Center after getting into a fight. Awaiting trial, Sam learns to process his emotions and becomes more hopeful about his future.Book Synopsis
Redheaded orphan Sam can't seem to stay out of trouble. His latest incident -- defending himself by hitting the high school quarterback in the face with a can of soda -- lands him in the Johnson "Blue Gables" Juvenile Center while he awaits trial. Sam needs to keep his nose clean, but can he control his temper when he's targeted by a long-term Gables resident?
When Sam is given a reading assignment, he thinks he'll have no interest in a classic book about another redheaded orphan. But he soon realizes that he's found a kindred spirit in the book, and maybe even an unexpected source of hope.
Review Quotes
"An Anne of Green Gables tale for modern readers, Sam by Eric Walters brilliantly integrates the classic with the modern for a very appealing YA story. ... This was a story that I simply just could not put down ... Through [it] I have rediscovered the beauty of Lucy Maude Montgomery's work."--Stephanie Lamb "Storytime with Stephanie"
"For lovers of L. M. Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables, the parallels between Anne's life and that of Sam will be evident, even though their differences in time and circumstances are significant. ... Eric Walters makes us believe in Sam."--Helen Kubiw "CanLit for Little Canadians"
"A sensitive exploration of the value of books for providing solace and guidance in troubled times."
