About the Author

Born and educated in the UK, Lucy Mallows spent 16 years in Budapest and Brussels, working as a journalist, travel writer and translator. As a writer, she contributed regularly to many international dailies and magazines, and wrote guidebooks (including three for Bradt: Bratislava, Romania: Transylvania and Slovakia) and articles on countries from Iceland to Portugal. An expert on central Europe who spoke seven languages, including Russian, Hungarian and a fair attempt at Slovak, her passions were travel, music, swimming, photography and football. She visited Slovakia regularly for 30 years, always marvelling at the city's ability to regenerate and improve on its already spectacular setting and world-class facilities'. Sadly, Lucy passed away in 2018. Celia and Rob Dillow are teachers, travellers, birdwatchers and hikers. Itchy-footed, they have lived and worked in Uruguay, Argentina and Italy - and raised three travel-loving sons on the way. Celia won Bradt's New Travel Writer of the Year Award in 2019 and has compiled two anthologies of travel writing) for Bradt (Travel Write and South America). After an initial career in the Foreign Office, Rob moved into teaching languages and managing schools. Enjoying tracking down and synthesising information from a variety of sources, and loving to write about the magic and mystery of faraway lands, the Dillows are experienced researchers who have explored Slovakia extensively to update Bradt's guidebook to the country: they bring fresh eyes and perspectives that will benefit travellers to the country.
