Description

Book Synopsis

This landmark volume brings together for the first time the rarely seen and previously unpublished Naggar Collection of artist's books, spanning from nineteenth-century collector's editions to the radical experiments of the twentieth-century avant-garde.

This volume offers both a sweeping historical survey and an intimate portrait of a private collection shaped by passion, curiosity, and connoisseurship. Moving from the pioneering works of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec through the mid-century masterpieces of Henri Matisse--including his iconic Jazz--to the bold publications of artists such as Andy Warhol, the book traces the evolution of the artist's book as a form. Along the way, it reveals how the book has been continually reimagined by major artistic movements--from Surrealism and Cubism to Expressionism and Conceptualism--each expanding what a book can be and do.

Essays offer multiple perspectives on the collection, while a comprehensive A-Z catalogue provides an invaluable resource for scholars and collectors. Published bilingually in English and French, this volume is a celebration of a remarkable collection and a lasting testament to the enduring power of the artist's book.
