On a snowy street, two girls live across from each other with their families and their cats. But one day, when conflict comes to their city, they all must grab a few possessions and ride on the crowded overnight train away from the place they know as home. Through the eyes of the girls' feline companions, we glimpse the pain of relocating under duress, while imagining a fantastical, hopeful future to come. Well suited for discussing and fostering empathy with young children, this wordless storyline by Gideon Strerer pairs with raw, emotive illustrations by artist Polina Doroshenko, who escaped Kyiv, Ukraine, with her daughter at the start of the war.

About the Author

Gideon Sterer is an award-winning author whose books include The Midnight Fair, illustrated by Mariachiara Di Giorgio, which received the Yoto Carnegie Shadowers' Choice Award, and The Christmas Owl, cowritten with Ellen Kalish and illustrated by Ramona Kaulitzki, which was a New York Times bestseller. Gideon Sterer lives in New York State.

Polina Doroshenko was one of the winning illustrators at the 2024 Bologna Children's Book Fair. Among the titles she has illustrated is The Story of Ukraine: An Anthem of Glory and Freedom, a nonfiction book based on the Ukrainian national anthem by Olena Kharchenko and Michael Sampson. When the war started in 2022, Polina and her young daughter had to flee their home and are now living in Barcelona.
