Book Synopsis

"Colorful and relevant..." --Slate

"With stunning artwork, propulsive sequential-art storytelling, and a thought-provoking premise, this is truly one of a kind." --Booklist (starred review)

From the creator of the New York Times bestselling series SAGA, comes the three-time, Eisner nominated, PanelSyndicate.com's digital comics sensation THE PRIVATE EYE, finally available in a paperback edition.

Set in an inevitable future of where everyone has a secret identity, THE PRIVATE EYE is an eerily prescient sci-fi mystery about an unlicensed private investigator who stumbles onto the most important case of his life.

The series is set in 2076, a time after "the cloud has burst", revealing everyone's secrets. As a result, there is no more Internet, and people are excessively guarded about their identity, to the point of appearing only masked in public.

Review Quotes

"THE PRIVATE EYE offers the pulpy thrills of the best comics--secret identities, private investigators, and a villain with a rocket--while taking a serious look at the fear that our digital shenanigans will ultimately doom us."-- "Slate Magazine"

"Vaughan and Martin aren't just tapping into paranoid fears of the present for TPE's subtext. They're also mining the ephemeral, ever-eroding collective memory of the past, too."-- "Kotaku"

"Vaughan is a master world-builder and Martin has a remarkable talent for creating detailed, living worlds, so it's no surprise that this is such an engrossing read."-- "A.V. Club"

"Vaughan's pay-what-you-can webcomic blends two irresistible genres -- sci-fi and detective stories -- and offers some of the most eye-catching images I saw in comics this year."-- "USA Today"

"Vaughan and Martin's vision of the future is chilling in its realism, but fascinating in its hyperbole."-- "Publishers Weekly (starred review)"

"A cool, satirical, thought-provoking futuristic noir for adults."-- "Library Journal"

"I read this for the first time on my train trip home, and nearly missed my stop I was so engrossed."-- "AIPT"

About the Author

Brian K. Vaughan is the Eisner and Hugo Award-winning writer/co-creator of multiple critically acclaimed series including Saga, Paper Girls, and Y: The Last Man, as well as the upcoming graphic novel Spectators with artist Niko Henrichon, who he last collaborated with on Pride of Baghdad. Vaughan lives with his family in Los Angeles, where he occasionally dabbles in film and television, though he's always happiest making comics.

Marcos Martin is a Catalan comic book artist whose work at Marvel and DC includes such titles as Batgirl: Year One, Breach, Dr.Strange: The Oath, Amazing Spider-man, and Daredevil. In 2013 he founded the online platform Panel Syndicate together with writer Brian K. Vaughan and illustrator/colorist Muntsa Vicente in order to distribute their creator-owned comic, The Private Eye. The series went on to win an Eisner Award for Best Digital/Webcomic and the Harvey Award for Best Online Comics Work. The Private Eye and Panel Syndicate have received critical acclaim and media attention for their role as one of the first DRM-free, pay-what-you-want comics and has continued to publish other works by the same team (Barrier, The Walking Dead: The Alien) as well as opening up to other renowned creators like Jay Faerber, Ken Niimura, David López or Albert Monteys.
