Book Synopsis

A high-wire comic novel about the packaging and performing of culture

Contrary to common misperception, we are loyal to our authors. Faithful to our texts. We also try--though we do not always find it easy--to remain true to our own convictions.

A group of esteemed translators has been brought to live in a museum. Their task during their stay is to complete a trial translation of the work of a celebrated local author. Their glass-walled rooms, daily meal, afternoon stroll, selection of hairstyles, choice of sleepwear, and feline companions have been carefully curated for maximum comfort, and to enable them to do their best work. And, in turn, to allow the museum's valued guests the opportunity to observe them. Also, perhaps, to photograph them. To take short videos as well. It is, of course, in the interest of all for the translators to take turns miking up so that their daily chatter can be shared with prospective donors. To work with personal trainers who will help them recreate, as best they can, the author's style. And for their mistranslations to be announced at a weekly assembly . . .
