About the Author

Dr. Sakena Yacoobi was born in Herat, Afghanistan and earned a master's degree in public health in the U.S..
She worked in Pakistan in the 1990s to increase the number of Afghan refugee girls in schools.Then, with the Taliban in power, Dr. Yacoobi founded the Afghan Institute of Learning to help Afghan women get the health and schooling they needed.
Today, Dr. Yacoobi is a respected expert in the fields of girls' education, health, refugees, and women's empowerment, and she often speaks at the United Nations, and at Stanford, Oxford, and other universities.
