Pet stairs commonly range from 2 to 5 steps. Some models offer adjustable or connectable configurations and list specific heights such as 11.5", 17.5" and 23". A 5-step option is about 29" tall and can often be split into a 3-step and a 2-step section for flexibility.

Assembly varies by product. Some units require adult assembly with basic tools, while many foam stairs arrive vacuum-compressed and need no assembly. A number of stair units also fold flat or collapse for compact storage.

Many fabric-covered and foam stairs have removable covers or pads that can be machine washed or hand washed. Look for descriptions that explicitly list "removable, washable pads" or "detachable, washable covers" when easy cleaning is important.

Pet stairs are designed for indoor use to help pets reach beds, sofas, windowsills, and perches. Some designs include a raised top bunk or window perch for lounging and are often recommended for older or less agile pets.

Small foam steps are roughly 16–18" long and about 12–13.5" high. Multi-step stairs commonly measure about 25–35" long with heights around 20–29". The window perch example lists about 19.68" W × 47.25" L × 25.6" H, and dog-house or furniture-style pieces can be much larger (examples up to roughly 70" × 65" × 50").

Common features include non-slip or anti-slip bottoms, textured or carpeted treads, and suede/velvet covers for traction. Sturdier materials (MDF, wood, or firmer foam) and solid construction are also used to reduce wobble.
