Advertised detection depths vary by model. Examples from the selection include up to 4.5 inches for a handheld pinpointer, up to 4" for some kids' detectors, up to 5" for other children-oriented coils, and up to 10" on several adult detectors. (Actual depth depends on the detector, coil size, target size and site conditions.)

Common modes include All‑Metal, Discrimination/Notch (DISC), Pinpoint (PP), Memory/Sniff, Jewelry, and specialized modes labeled for gold, tokens or coins. These modes help filter unwanted targets and focus on specific metal types.

Detector displays commonly show signal strength, selected mode, estimated target depth, a target or metal ID indicator, battery level/status, sensitivity and volume settings. Several models also include backlit LCD screens for better visibility.

Kits often include accessories such as headphones, shovels or foldable digging tools, carry bags or backpacks, digging probes or rakes, holsters or pouches, and sometimes batteries and a user guide/manual.

Models offer alert methods such as audible tones, vibration, or both. Many use multi‑tone audio (for example three tones to indicate different metal types), adjustable volume controls, and an earphone jack for private listening.
