Delsie, who tracks the weather and lives with her kindhearted Grammy, longs for a "regular family." With support from neighbors and a new friend, Ronan, she navigates changes, friendship, loss, and learning to recognize and manage emotional differences as they "weather any storm."

The book explores several interrelated themes: family and perspective, emotional growth and identifying feelings, friendship and loss, and social/class tensions within a small seaside community—focusing on tween coming‑of‑age experiences.

Reviewers emphasize the vividly depicted Cape Cod setting—focusing on year‑round residents rather than tourist scenes—and describe the tone as sweet, summery, and a realistic sketch of small‑town preteen life.

The central relationship is between Delsie and her kindhearted Grammy. Delsie also forms friendships—some that drift apart—and develops a key new friendship with Ronan; neighbors act as additional sources of support as characters face loss and change.

The story addresses emotions directly: characters learn to distinguish feelings (for example, angry vs. sad; broken vs. whole; abandoned vs. loved) and the narrative shows characters coping with losses and finding support.
