Most titles are aimed at adult readers (listed as 22 years and up), while a smaller number are presented as young-adult or middle-teen nonfiction (listed as 12–15 years).

Titles cover U.S. and Canadian connections — some focus on Toronto and Canada’s role, others concentrate on the U.S. Southeast (including Georgia), and several address routes and sites across both the United States and Canada.

Many titles include illustrations and maps; some also offer interactive sidebars, primary-source letters and diary entries, chronologies, and suggested-reading bibliographies for further research.

Several works map and describe routes and stops: they identify significant stations, outline possible itineraries, and describe rivers, canals, and railroads that facilitated travel between locations in the United States and Canada.

The books feature freedom seekers and refugees, stationmasters and conductors, abolitionists and everyday helpers, as well as named historical figures and biographical profiles of people who fled slavery or assisted escapes.
