Enlarged laminated maps are more immersive and built for heavy use: they use a heavy-duty 1.6 mil laminate that improves durability and humidity resistance. Poster-size maps are more compact and affordable to frame, take less wall space, and are easier to replace or swap for different displays.

Most U.S. wall maps use paper-based stock (paper or paperboard). Some editions are encapsulated in a plastic laminate — often a heavy-duty 1.6 mil laminate — for added protection and moisture resistance.

Wall maps typically show all 50 states with insets for Hawai‘i and Alaska (including a relative-size inset), clearly defined state and country boundaries, cities, national parks, major physical features and mountain ranges, major water bodies and ocean bathymetry, and transportation routes such as interstate highways, state routes, airports, waterways, canals, and ferries.

Listings show at least two visual styles: a Classic style with a bright, easy-to-read palette (blue oceans and colorful state borders) and an antique-style “executive” color palette.

Maps are produced for classrooms and homes and are commonly recommended for children (examples given: ages 7–12 and 8+). More detailed or executive maps list suggested ages of 14 and up. Typical settings include classrooms, homes, and libraries for geography and educational use.

Poster map packs are packaged in a two-inch diameter clear plastic tube with a decorative label that displays a thumbnail of the maps and their dimensions.

Place naming is extensive: descriptions note thousands of place names that are carefully and artfully placed to maintain legibility, even in heavily populated areas.

Poster-size maps (for example, 36" x 24") are easier and more affordable to frame and take up less wall space than larger wall maps. Laminated maps can also be framed without glass, which allows for lighter frames and easier installation.
