A: I ordered the 45L and it is way too large to be considered a personal item. It is definitely the size of a standard carry-on. It looks too big to be comfortably carried on my back. I am returning it.

A: Try rolling your clothes, like a couple of shirts, underwear, socks, and sleepwear. I have one of this. But I never used it. But I will one day.
