Use the tips & visuals in this guide to make taking your child's body measurements easy-peasy.

Dont have a fabric tape measure? Use a shoelace or pant leg to measure. Then, lay it flat & use a ruler or tape measure to get a numerical measurement.

How to measure

  • Height

    Have your child stand in front of the fridge.Mark the top of the head with a magnet. Measure a straight line from floor to magnet.

  • Chest

    Have your child make airplane arms. Wrap tape measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping it level & snug.

  • Waist

    With your child bending to one side, measure the point where the waist flexes naturally. Keep the tape level & comfortably loose.

  • Hip

    Have your child stand like a tall tree with feet together. Measure a level line around the fullest part of the hips & seat.

  • Inseam

    Take a pair of pants that fit your child well. Measure along the seam from crotch to leg opening.

    Runs very large

    My son is 43" tall, so on the low end of the size chart for XS. He wears size 4 and xs in Carter's and The Children's Place. I knew Target's clothing ran large, but this shirt is a whole cuff—about 2" on each sleeve—longer than his other shirts. And that's after washing (it's only 60% cotton, so it didn't shrink much). We picked it up the night before a funeral and he wore it under a suit jacket, which kept the sleeves from covering his hands. But that is the only way he can wear it for the foreseeable future.

    THE SIZE CHART IS WRONG

    The sizing chart is WRONG. I bought one online for an event to arrive the day before. I studied the chart before purchasing. It says a L is a 10-12. My son is 10 and is a little big for his age so I thought it will either be perfect or just a tad big. It arrives and the tag says size L/12-14. It’s way too big for him to wear now.
