Book Synopsis

Eberhard Wimmer's architecture combines precise design, functional quality, and a sensitive understanding of space, materials, and the surrounding environment to create a distinctive architectural language. He became known in particular for his subtle church renovations, including the Gethsemane Church in Sendling, the neo-Gothic St. Paul's Church in Munich, and the postwar St. Mark's Church in Munich. A particularly complex building was the Berlin-Friedrichshagen Storage Library (2005-2014)--this large-scale project, which emerged from an architectural competition, was designed to alleviate the storage capacity shortages at various libraries in central Berlin. Wimmer's work has received numerous awards and is documented in this publication alongside his artistic works.

About the Author

Eberhard Wimmer studied architecture at the Technical University of Munich and at Cornell University in New York; he was also a Fritz Schumacher Fellow and a Fulbright Scholar. In 1987, he established his own architectural practice in Munich. Wimmer was appointed to the Council of the Baukultur Foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1999, he received the BDA Bavaria Prize for the renovation of the Gethsemane Church in Sendling; in 2018, he received the Special Prize - Bavarian Timber Construction Award for St Joseph's Church in Holzkirchen; and in 2020, he was nominated for the DAM Prize (for St Joseph's Church in Holzkirchen)
