Fishbone Cinderella holds your hand while it stabs you in the heart. This book tells the story Yut Ying as she grows up in a post-war China with family she’s never met and a family curse that’s just starting to manifest within her, contrasted to her daughter’s experiences growing up as a first generation Chinese-American with hopes to be a first-gen college student. This book deals with the complexities of having to grow up too soon and the effects a parent’s cruelty can have on children and how that can continue generationally, while also diving into the importance of family and how they can make a bad situation a bit easier. Lim does a fantastic job of handling hard and emotional situations within this book without it feeling forced. The writing is beautiful and heartfelt, it’s very obvious a lot of love went into the making of this book. It greatly showcases the sacrifices made in the name of love and how loss shapes us in different ways, while also still holding out for a glimmer of hope when things seem dark.
