Description

About the Book

In 1403, Ruy González de Clavijo sets out for Tamerlane's court as an envoy of Henry III. The fate of Castile hangs in the balance during the embassy to the Great Khan. Thousands of leagues from home, beyond treacherous seas and scorching deserts, a journey begins that will test the limits of human courage. For this is not merely a journey: it is a gamble for the survival of a kingdom beset by threats, a diplomatic gambit in which every word can tip the balance of history. From Puerto de Santa María to the legendary Samarkand, Clavijo will traverse warring empires, fabulous cities, and territories where Europe fades and the East is born. Endless caravans, palaces of gold, court intrigues, and armies capable of ravaging continents accompany the ambassador's advance toward the heart of Timurid power. There, Tamerlane awaits him -- the invincible conqueror, the warlord whose name strikes fear from Anatolia to India. Facing him is a Castilian with no weapons other than his intelligence, his faith, and his loyalty to the Crown. But in a world where glory and death ride side by side, any misstep can seal the fate of a nation. This is the chronicle of an impossible mission. The true story of a man who traveled to the ends of the known world to change the course of Castile. The epic of the Spaniard who dared to look the master of Asia in the eye.
