Homero probablemente nació alrededor del año 725 a, C, en la costa de Asia Menor, hoy la costa de Turquía, pero que en aquel entonces formaba parte de Grecia, Homero fue el primer escritor griego cuya obra se conserva, Perteneció a una larga línea de bardos, o poetas, que trabajaron con la tradición oral, Homero y otros bardos de la época podían recitar o cantar largos poemas épicos, Ambas obras atribuidas a Homero --La Ilíada y La Odisea-- tienen más de diez mil versos en su versión original, Homero debió de tener una memoria asombrosa, pero el estilo poético formal de la época le ayudó, Nunca podremos estar seguros de que ambas historias pertenecieran a Homero, Sea cual sea la verdad sobre su origen, ambas historias, desarrolladas hace unos tres mil años, bien podrían leerse dentro de tres mil años,
