About the Book

Everyone experiences loss. The question is: what are you going to gain from it? Like a River, a triumphant story of new life birthed out of tragedy, will teach readers how to face their failures, confront their pain, and connect with God---the true source of life.

Book Synopsis

Like a River, a triumphant story of new life birthed out of tragedy, will teach readers how to face their failures, confront their pain, and connect with God--the true source of life.

On June 4th, 2019, country music singer Granger Smith was enjoying a final evening with his kids before heading to Nashville for the CMT Music Awards and his next tour. While helping his daughter London with her gymnastics, his youngest son fell into their pool. Granger did everything he could to get to him, but he was too late. River drowned, and Granger's world shattered.

The days, weeks, and months that followed River's death sent Granger on a dark and painful journey. Every time he closed his eyes, he replayed the horrific event in his mind, and every time he opened his computer, he was bombarded by the critique and criticism of people who blamed him for the accident.

Despite his best effort to get back on stage with a smile and song, it was all a façade. On the inside he was dying. Fortunately, that's not how his story ended. And now he is compelled to help people all around the world find strength, peace, and hope on the other side of tragedy.

  • Like a River, life is full of twists and turns.
  • Like a River, people pollute our world with their critique and criticism.
  • Like a River, tragic events keep us dammed up.
  • But like a river, we can find the courage to keep moving downstream.

Rivers don't run on their own strength; they flow from their source. When we try to keep going on our own, we won't make it, but when we connect to the greater source, we will find the strength and the faith to keep living after loss. This triumphant story of new life birthed out of death will inspire every reader to live Like a River.

This book is an amazing testament to taking your life and going to the Lord for forgiveness. Granger openly and rawly shares how he asked the Lord to save him and how he changed his life to walk with and for the Lord. We ALL have challenges in life and Granger with his words shares a way to push through those challenges Like A River. A wonderful book, Highly recommend!!!!

I could not put this book down! I read it cover to cover in less than 24 hours and would already like to pick it up for a reread again. Granger is so incredibly raw and real in this book, he truly holds nothing back in telling his story. There is beautiful imagery throughout and his story telling in sharing his grief journey was such an honor to read. I highly recommend this book! We have already purchased a few more copies for friends and people we have met who are walking through their own grief journies at the moment.

I could not put this book down. This book is beneficial for anyone who has gone through loss of any kind. I truly believe this book will resonate with many that need to hear it. This book can give hope for those that believe there’s no way through a tragedy. This is a great story about how God can renew us and how there is purpose for pain.

This was a very easy read (a good thing). The genuineness and transparency of this book makes it a very practical tool for those who have loss and suffering in their lives. I would recommend this book to everyone!! I don’t know how many more times I’ll read this book but it will definitely be more than just once. This will be on the replay shelf. Thank you Granger Smith for being so real and honest about your journey through your loss. May God bless you, Amber and the kids as you venture into your call to full time ministry!

I was blown away by Grangers story. Out of the multitude of emotions I felt while reading this book admiration and respect were the biggest I walked away with when I finished. The level of respect I now have for Granger and his family is immense, for being open and completely vulnerable in sharing their story. I did not nor would I ever have been able to make it through the book with a dry eye. As a mother I could not even begin to imagine how the loss of a child would impact a person or how deeply it would cut into their soul. I feel like he did an amazing job retelling his experiences, while being raw and not glazing over the “ugly” in his story. Because of his family’s experience my son has been completed ISR lessons and a refresher course, with plans to enroll my youngest when she’s old enough.

If you've been a fan of Granger Smith for any length of time, you know at least part of his story. It's not something he has been shy about sharing, but the truth is, until now, you don't really know his story. When picking up this book, you would expect this to be a little bit heavy. You'd be right; there is a lot of incredibly heavy stuff that Granger Smith shares with much vulnerability. But - if you're looking for a tell-all, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book on theology, this isn't it. Instead, this is the story of a faithful God meeting us in the middle of our mess, redeeming us when all hope seems lost, and drawing our hearts to Him. There is hope beyond all the heavy!

This book is a very powerful and emotional book. If you have lost someone either through death, divorce, or break up of a friendship. If you watched someone you care about walking out of your life or had any other grief or traumatic experience that was life shattering, then this is a good book to read. This is a book that will help you process all that you're going through. It will help you understand that the way you are feeling is normal when you want to scream at the world or hide away from it all. This book will also help show that life can still go on despite everything that happened. The author did go through the trauma he wrote about. It's about how he learned to cope with life after his traumatic experience. Go grab a copy for yourself, a family member, or a friend you won't be disappointed. I am very selective about the books I read. This is a book I will read again, which is very rare for me to do

You think you know the story, but you have no idea. As a fan if Granger’s since roughly 2017, I’ve been around since before, during, and after the tragic loss of River. I’ve followed all the podcast, interviews, social media post, and YouTube videos. I thought I knew the story, but I had no idea. Granger completely pulls back the curtain on his grieving process, and gives you the most raw, unfiltered look at the darkest times in his life and finding light after. No matter the type of grief you are dealing with, this book can help you. As somebody who thought they’ve dealt with their grief, this book helped me realize I have much more work to do. This is an incredible book, with a more incredible message that all should read.
