Book Synopsis

In this new Regency romance, a young unwed mother must protect her heart from the charms of her convenient new husband, Lord Torrington. She is not, however, prepared to protect her life.

When the widowed Lord Torrington agreed to spy for the crown, he never planned to impersonate a highwayman, let alone rob the wrong carriage. Stranded on the road with an unconscious young woman, he is forced to propose marriage to protect his identity and her reputation, as well as his dangerous mission.

Trapped not only by her duty to her country but also by her limited options as an unwed mother, Miss Elizabeth Cantrell and her infant son are whisked away to Middlecrest Abbey by none other than the elder brother of her son's absent father. There she is met by Torrington's beautiful grown daughters, a vicious murder, and an urgent hunt for the missing intelligence that could turn the war with France. Meanwhile she must convince everyone that her marriage is a genuine love match if her new husband has any hope of uncovering the enemy.

Determined to keep her son's true identity a secret, Elizabeth will need to remain one step ahead of her fragile heart, her uncertain future, and the relentless fiend bent on her new family's ruin.

Early Praise for Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey:

"Murder is far from no one's thoughts in this delicious new romantic mystery from Abigail Wilson. With scandal dodging every turn of the page, mystery hiding behind the visage of each character, and a romance brewing with an English rake of the worse--and best--sorts, readers will find nothing lacking! I was entranced, mesmerized, addlepated, and not a little bit bewildered as I wandered the halls of Middlecrest Abbey." --Jaime Jo Wright, author of the Christy Award-winning novel, The House on Foster Hill

"From the very first page, I was enraptured! Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey has intrigue, mystery, and suspense beautifully enhanced by the vulnerability revealed through memorable characters making this story impossible to put down. A must-read recommendation, this story is exactly what makes me love reading!" --Natalie Walters, author of the Harbored Secrets series

"Suspicion shades the affluent grounds of Middlecrest Abbey in this riveting novel by Abigail Wilson. The artful balance of mystery and romance cleverly blends with the Gothic tones of Regency England. With exquisite prose and a layered plot, Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey is a compelling story not to be missed." --Rachel Scott McDaniel, award-winning author of Above the Fold

A great romantic mystery story

5 out of 5 stars

In Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey, Elizabeth Cantrell finds herself in the middle of a scandal, a marriage of convenience, and a murder investigation. When Adrian Radcliff holds up her coach causing an accident in the process, she can hardly believe that the brother of her illegitimate son’s father, a man with a questionable reputation, is now claiming to be a spy working for Britain. And now to maintain his cover and for her protection, she must marry him. But the marriage of convenience quickly becomes a partnership in an investigation, and as the situation becomes more dangerous and more complicated, feelings begin to develop as they work closely with each other. But can Adrian keep Elizabeth and her son safe? And will he still feel the same if she reveals the truth about her son’s father? I was pleasantly surprised by Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey. I hadn’t read this author before and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I thought this book was great. The story was exciting and intense, always adding new and unexpected twists. The characters were easy to like and relate to. And the chemistry between Elizabeth and Adrian was palpable. And while it was a well-written romance, it was also clean which I appreciate. Overall, I think this is a book I would go back and read again. I really thoroughly enjoyed it. *I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

This was a FANTASTIC mystery! I could not read it fast enough to see how everything fit together and who the bad guys were. I really enjoyed the characters of Elizabeth and Lord Torrington and the ways they worked together to solve the mystery. I loved the way Torrington included Elizabeth in everything rather than shutting her out simply because she was a woman. This was such a fun read and I highly recommend it. I received this book from the author and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

“I blinked a few times and took a deep breath. Apparently I’d survived.” Opening lines of “Masquerade at Middlecrest Abbey” by Abigail Wilson Set in 1815, Abigail Wilson opens “Masquerade At Middlecrest Abbey” with a dramatic carriage robbery. Our leading lady, Elizabeth, agrees to marry Lord Torrington mere hours after meeting him in order to protect him and Britain. She doesn’t realise she is putting the lives of herself and her son in danger in doing so. Lord Torrington is ferreting our French spies and thinks of the marriage as a cover for his identity unaware of danger lurking at home in Middlecrest Abbey. Suspicious, dangerous and deadly happenings follow them and soon they fear for all their lives as they realise it has to be someone in their midst! The characters’ suspense is held right until the end of the book when the true villain is finally revealed! I found the first quarter of the book a little slow but a masquerade marriage is one of my least favourite tropes, I just can’t resist an Abigail Wilson book! Once the mystery was fully fledged, the pace picked up and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Her characters are carefully created with interesting histories which makes the reading all the more enjoyable. If you love historical romance, this is one for you! It’s a four out of five on the enJOYment scale.

This book was so much fun to read. It was unique in so many ways, and I found it nearly impossible to put down. Masquerade at Middlecrest Abby was the first novel I have read by Abigail Wilson and can easily say that it won’t be my last. I was swept away on an adventure with twists and turns around every corner. Suspecting everyone I was kept on my toes, and couldn’t get enough. I easily fell in love with Lord Torrington and loved watching him and Elizabeth get to know each other in such unusual circumstances. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Historical Fiction. There was the perfect mixture of mystery, romance, and suspense. I can’t wait to see what Wilson does next. I received a copy of this book from Thomas Nelson publishers and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Abigail Wilson weaves a thrilling Gothic mystery with a regency romance and the result kept me on the edge of my seat from first page to last! The suspenseful plot is well paced as Wilson expertly drops clues but does it in a way that leaves the Ah-ha for the right moment. The convenient marriage romance between Adrian and Elizabeth is very sweet but is challenged by the intrigue that surrounds them and their pasts that they cannot escape. This was the first book I have read by this author but it certainly will not be the last. A solid 5 stars! I received an advance copy from the publisher through Netgalley but am leaving an honest review of my own opinions.

I thoroughly enjoyed the explosive start to this novel, it is both engaging and intriguing. I also appreciated the understanding of the historical perspective and the way the author leveraged it in the storyline. Sadly, I found the latter part of the book a little less rewarding and had managed to work out the force behind the murder ahead of time, which took a little of the pleasure out of the reading. I'm sure that there are many who enjoy Regency, murder mysteries that will thoroughly enjoy this storyline! With thanks to #Netgalley, Thomas Nelson and the author for my Advanced Reader Copy. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.
