Book Synopsis

In this Gothic Regency romance Rebecca fears she has developed feelings for the man she swore to see hanged, her brother's murderer.

After her brother's mysterious death, Rebecca Hunter vows to expose the man she believes responsible: Mr. Lewis Browning--known by the locals as the Midnight Devil and by Rebecca as her new guardian.

Summoned to his reclusive country estate to await her London season, Rebecca plans her own secret investigation among the darkened corridors of the mysterious Greybourne Hall. Yet Lewis Browning is not as she once imagined, and his motivation is horribly unclear. Recurrent nightmares and Rebecca's restless feelings are further complicated by the shadow of her mother's prior descent into madness and wondering if she, too, will follow the same heartbreaking path.

Even as midnight rides, strange injuries, and further murders lead back to Mr. Browning, Rebecca can't ignore the subtle turn of her heart. Has she fallen for the man she swore would pay for her brother's death? And moreover, can she trust him with her uncertain future?

Praise for Abigail Wilson:

"In the Shadow of Croft Towers is everything I love in a novel: a classic gothic feel, a regency setting, a mysterious hero . . . and secrets abounding!" --Dawn Crandall, award-winning author of the Everstone Chronicles series

"Shades of Gothic romance in a portrait of Regency England . . . if Jane Austen ever met Jane Eyre, it would be at Croft Towers!" --Kristy Cambron, author of Castle on the Rise, of In the Shadow of Croft Towers

"Blending the unputdownable Regency flair of Georgette Heyer with the intricate plotting of Julie Klassen, Wilson not only places herself competently amidst beloved authors but carves out a unique place of her own." --Rachel McMillan, author of the Van Buren and DeLuca Mysteries

"Beautifully written, suspenseful, and satisfyingly romantic." --Jennifer Beckstrand, author of Home on Huckleberry Hill

"Murder is far from no one's thoughts in this delicious new romantic mystery from Abigail Wilson. With scandal dodging every turn of the page, mystery hiding behind the visage of each character, and a romance brewing with an English rake of the worse--and best--sorts, readers will find nothing lacking! I was entranced, mesmerized, addlepated, and not a little bit bewildered as I wandered the halls of Middlecrest Abbey." --Jaime Jo Wright, author of the Christy Award-winning novel, The House on Foster Hill

An Alluring Regency Romance!

"I'd found a man - - - - conflicted. Slow to speak, yet clearly riddled with secrets." Secrets. So many secrets. Rebecca Hunter's tenacious determination to ferret them out is clearly matched by her guardian's skill at keeping them close. On the dark night that her brother was killed, what actually happened on that bridge; a terrible accident or cold blooded murder? Nearly everyone believes that Lewis Browning was somehow responsible, but after getting to know the enigmatic master of Greybourne Hall, Rebecca begins to wonder if the truth about Jacob's untimely death will ever be exposed. Now living under its very roof, Rebecca finds that the old majestic estate seems to crawl with mysterious inclinations all its own, some of them hidden in plain view while others beckon to her in the night. Regency romance, mystery, and history pleasantly combine in this alluring tale of "midnight on the River Grey".

In her sophomore book, Abigail Wilson continues to be a force to be reckoned with. I love the gothic feel to her Regency Romance and how it keeps you on the edge of your seat quickly turning pages. Her books show originality and have a lyrical tone that keeps the pace moving. Darkened hallways, a vast estate, candles, midnight riders, and a hero that you can imagine making your heart beat faster all cumulate for an incredible read. Trying to figure out who she can trust and the mysterious happenings, Rebecca Hunter shows great strength and bravery. She is curious, determined, and great at putting pieces together to form the big picture. I definitely recommend putting this on your must read list. I won a copy of this book and am so thankful I did. The honest review and opinions are my own and were not required.

Midnight on the River Grey by Abigail Wilson is a regency novel set in an early English countryside estate. Rebecca Hunter wants to find out how her brother was murdered but the only problem is, her new guardian is the suspect. I loved the adventurous nature of Rebecca. How even though she was frightened she didn’t let her fear stop her from seeking answers to her questions. She wasn’t afraid to admit when she was wrong. I really enjoyed the story-line. It kept my interest all the way to the surprising end. I love plot twists! I received this book from Celebrate-Lit in exchange for my honest review.

Another stellar read from Abigail Wilson! Written from first person perspective of main character Rebecca, the book has intrigue and danger of 1811 England shrouded in foreboding, chill-inducing Gothic-like mystery, deliciously crisp and witty dialogue, deeply layered and rich characters, a sweet and tender romance, and a plot that twists and turns to make it an incredible historical romantic suspense. From the prologue, Rebecca’s plight will draw you into her heart and thoughts and this bold, loyal, outspoken, intelligent, determined young woman will captivate you as she grows and matures despite the secrecy surrounding her new home at Greybourne Hall and her painful past. Rebecca, having survived her parents’ and her beloved brother’s deaths, has no choice but to move to her guardian’s estate of Greybourne Hall with her widowed aunt. She’s determined to find out the exact circumstances of her brother’s death near Greybourne Hall. Her guardian, Lewis Browning, is young, handsome, and charitable though quite stand-offish at first and has many secrets that begin to unfold page by page. As each secret and puzzle piece to the masterful plot is revealed, you’ll be mesmerized and will likely finish the book in one sitting like I did. I received a copy of the book from Thomas Nelson via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

I have been waiting months to read this! Ever since reading and loving Abigail's debut novel in January, I knew I HAD to read this one. I am happy to say it did not disappoint! It was a bit of a slower start for me and it took a bit for me to really connect to the characters, but once I did I was hooked. The mystery was great and had a couple twists I did not see coming which I really liked about the book. It connects to her first book(which I HIGHLY recommend) and also to her upcoming book that releases in the Spring of 2020. Make sure you check out Abigail's books soon! I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

Mystery & Romance

Rebecca Hunter has had so much to deal with in the past few years. Her mother's struggle with mental illness and her subsequent death; her brother Jacob's fatal accident that was likely murder; and then, being sent with her Aunt Jo to live with the man that many believe is responsible for Jacob's death. What follows is a story filled with mystery, intrigue, and the tantalizing start of a romance between Rebecca and her guardian Lewis Browning. The very strong attraction between the two of them soon becomes obvious and their first kiss simply took my breath away! Set in the Regency era, this book reminds me of the gothic romances by Victoria Holt and Mary Stewart that I fell in love with many years ago. Greybourne Manor with its many rooms and dark passageways; mysterious midnight rides and a hero who has been referred to as the Midnight Devil; and the young heroine who can't determine her true feelings for her guardian. 'Lewis Browning. What was he to me? My guardian? My coconspirator? My brother's murderer? Or something else entirely?' Midnight on the River Grey is the first book that I've read by Abigail Wilson but it won't be my last. She has proven herself to be a wonderful historical fiction author and I look forward to enjoying more of her books in the future! A review copy of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley and via JustRead Publicity Tours. I voluntarily chose to share my review and all views and opinions expressed are my own.
