I used it to identify some 'mystery' network connections in my house. This tool worked great and was easy to use. I would have paid 4 times the price.
Just buy it and STOP wondering!

Great for Checking my New Home

My new home came with a central media center where all Ethernet and coax cables were terminated. I had five of each. They were not labeled as to which cable was connected to which room. Using this device, I was easily able to determine that and to confirm that all eight conductors were wired correctly. One room was completely disconnected and the builder fixed it. I used an RJ45 to coax adapter (which unfortunately Monoprice does not sell) to test the coax connections.
Does what it needs to do

This works great to verify that all wires are connected and working. It will show opens, mi-wired pins, and shorted pins or wires. It cannot test that the twisted pairs are mated to the correct pin pairs but this is a minor issue since that is easy to check visually. You can use 2 short jumpers to test your premise wiring.
Works great

Simple device, but a great time saver when installing wired network. At only about $10 I should have bought one of these years ago.
Perfect for my needs

I make up my own RJ12 straight-through and RJ45 crossover and straight-through cables for model railroading. This tester is simple but effective in this role. Verifies all conductors as continuous (or not) and that they are of the correct pin assignment (straight or crossover). You have to know what a crossover pin out should be, but a quick cheat-sheet and eventually your memory will be enough. For simple installations I can recommend this tester.

Great tool. My only gripe is the 9V battery. It would have been great if the batteries were AA or something a bit more common. Not that 9V batteries are uncommon, but I certainly have more AAs at home than 9V batteries.
Couldn’t be happier.

My only issue is that the LED's do not line up with the pucnch-out numbers holes, meaning that when it goes through a test, the LED lights up but so does the one below it (half lit).
Just what I needed to test RJ-45 cables

This sure beats using a multi-meter, especially when both ends aren't available at the same time.

I needed something to teach with that is quick or to make sure I have the wires mapped correctly. It works good for checking if I have the correct line.
Works, added coax tester!

Works as advertised, and useful to make sure you've got solid connections on your punch down keystones. Similar items are widely available and often also have BNC coax testers on them. So I cracked it open, and all of the traces are there for the coax connector. The local electronics store had the 1N4148 diode and square LEDs needed, as well as the coax jack. Soldering was easy as the holes were push-through, and already had solder on them. To make the coax terminator with an LED, use the appropriate connector for the end of the cable being tested and simply connect the positive LED lead to the center wire and the negative to the outside. Once you punch out the extra hole on the front of the plastic case of the Master unit (below the G light) it will light up the new LED in sequence.
Works Great

This item we have sold for many years. It's reasonable and is perfect for confirming RJ11/12 and RG45 cables are wired properly. We have sold probably 50 of them and they are pretty easy to use and always work. Great price too!
