Q: what brand /type of wood or pellets work best for this item?
submitted by Kim - 7 months ago
A: Hello! The perfect smokeless flame requires quality, dry fuel. Kiln-dried hardwoods such as oak, or maple have a low moisture content, so they’ll burn at a higher temperature and give your flames a smooth secondary burn effect. Any pellets for the most part will work. We also sell some on the Solo Stove website: https://solostove.com/en-us/p/premium-wood-fuel-pellets.

We love the stove using wood, but when using wood pellets it is basically a fill it once and then done. We have the Mesa size. We were initially excited that to be able to use wood pellets because we wanted to use it while camping. Because of restrictions on taking wood to another state and the small size of wood that the stove takes, we thought pellets would be the answer. However, a load of pellets burned up very quickly and then when more were added, they smothered the burning ones and then the stove turned into a great smudge pot, smoking up the whole camp site! We got it burning again and even trickling in the pellets it became smoky and took too much attention to try to keep boing that we just gave up. Some folks across from our site had a larger version of the stove and in talking with them, they too had the same experience when they tried to use pellets. In the future when we go camping we will just pack along some chunks of kiln dried wood and avoid the pellets.
Pellets simply don’t work

It’s super hard to sustain a fire with pellets. Small wood is better but it all requires a lot of attention to the fire to avoid choking or running out of fuel. Cute but not practical by any means.
Everybody loves it

I have enjoyed using my solo stove so far. It seems very well built, and is much easier to use than a traditional log fire. Works well with pellets. It doesn't put out a lot of heat so it's good for warm weather use. Take up very little room when in the box so it's super portable. Thanks for the great Father's Day price.
Solo gas pizza oven is a family and friend magnet

Our family LOVES pizza, especially with homemade dough and tomato sauces. The kids ask to come over and have their friends participate in building their own pizzas. Not to mention how my Solo oven was a hit during football season. I clean the stones and the inside of the oven after every occasion. I would ask that the design be enhanced so that the top could be removed for cleaning. Another suggestion is enhancing the design so that the flame is on three sides of the oven and possibly detenting the gas valve a little more so the flame isn't so blazing high when in the low setting. That would especially help so that the oven would not have to be constantly tended, and the pizza constantly turned. This leads me to one other enhancement consideration. A slow, auto-rotating stone! It would alleviate the 95% surveillance and provide a more uniform result. After using my Solo pizza stove for a year and a half, I have to say it has been a grand investment in comradery building, culinary prowess, and plain ol' fun. Thanks Solo Team
The Perfect Take-And-Go Stove For Travel!

We recently purchased the Mesa XL and traveled from the East Coast to Alaska, USA and Yukon, Canada for a camping road-trip vacation. The Mesa XL can fit in its box in a bookbag for airline's "personal item" bag size and easily slides under your seat. TSA requires that the stove be clean of debris, but security made no comment to us about the stove in any of our security checks. We were then able to use the stove in campsite fire rings and on our picnic tables at every campground we visited. We had also purchased the heat deflector, and we packed it in our luggage. It too would have fit in a bookbag in its box, but we wanted to save space and didn't want it to be damaged. The Mesa XL kept us warm in 40 degree weather, and we didn't have to worry about purchasing expensive camp wood because we could just pick up small sticks off the ground at every camp site and a small pile of sticks would last for several hours. The cherry on top was the fact that our fires were smokeless, and so we didn't spend our trip smelling like campfire! The stove then wiped up easily for our flights home. I highly recommend the Mesa XL! It's so nice to have a stove for use at home or for camping when you don't want to go to the trouble (and expense) of starting a large smokey camp fire and then waiting for it to burn out and be dosed safely hours later. Want a fire that will keep your family toasty for just an hour; then this is your product! Want a fire that will last all day; the Mesa XL can do that too! Thanks for creating this fun take-and-go smokeless stove!
Thank you

We love using the solo stove on our small patio. Gives us the bonfire feel without need a large pit. Since it is so small, it burns through everything very very quickly so it takes a lot of work to keep it hot enough to prevent the smoke. It felt like a full time job to keep it fed. Still enjoyable and happy with the purchase.
Love it!

I have the solo mesa. I got it because I enjoyed sitting around the big one my son has at his house. I never in my life learned to build a fire so it took a few tries for me to get it started the first time. Now I'm good :-) I have it on the outer railing of my deck and at night my two dogs and I enjoy the flames and watch the sun go down. So happy.

I recommend not using the pellets. After about 45 minutes it clogged the holes on the bottom and the fire goes out.
