Songs of Something Else presents seventy-five poems by Gunnar Ekelöf, one of the most important Scandinavian and European poets of the twentieth century. These poems are drawn from Ekelöf's middle period (1938-1959), during which he wrote some of his richest and most enduring poetry and established himself as a central figure in Swedish literature. The translators introduce and discuss Ekelöf's work, offer a close analysis of one poem, "Dordogne," and provide explanatory notes to the poems. The volume also features the original Swedish texts on facing pages.

About the Author

Gunnar Ekelöf (1907-1968) was an award-winning Swedish poet and essayist and a member of the Swedish Academy. Leonard Nathan (1924-2007) was a poet, critic, translator, and professor of rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley. His poetry collection Returning Your Call (Princeton) was nominated for a National Book Award. James Larson (1931-2021) was professor of comparative literature and Scandinavian studies at the University of California, Berkeley.
