Book Synopsis

"An incredibly fun thrill-ride by a masterful storyteller." --Marie Lu, #1 New York Times Bestselling author of Stars And Smoke

A teenage sorcerer's apprentice must solve her boss's murder in order to prove her innocence in this twisty, magic-infused murder mystery perfect for fans of Knives Out and The Inheritance Games.

Being an apprentice to one of the world's most famous sorcerers has its challenges; Tabatha Zeng just didn't think they would include solving crime. But when her boss, the infamous fortuneteller Sorcerer Solomon, predicts his own brutal death--and worse, it comes true--Tabatha finds herself caught in the crosshairs.

The police have their sights set on her and Callum Solomon, her murdered boss's youngest son. With suspicion swirling around them, the two decide to team up to find the real killer and clear their own names once and for all.

But solving a murder isn't as easy as it seems, especially when the suspect list is mostly the rich, connected, and magical members of Sorcerer Solomon's family. And Tabatha can't quite escape the nagging voice in her head asking: just how much can she really trust Callum Solomon?

Nothing is as it seems in this quick-witted and fantastical murder mystery.

YA fantasy murder mystery

3 out of 5 stars

Thank you Penguin Teen for the gifted ARC book. When Sorcerer Solomon is murdered, his apprentice, Tabatha, and son, Callum, team up to identify the killer in order to clear their names. The task is extra challenging due to the suspect list being full of rich magical members of the sorcerer’s family. Tabatha also isn’t sure she can trust Callum. Although I found the premise intriguing, THESE DEADLY PROPHECIES was a YA fantasy murder mystery that unfortunately fell flat for me overall. I had a hard time staying engaged as the plot felt pretty predictable and the pacing quite slow. The fantasy aspects of the sorcerer’s apprentice and the magic were fun concepts, but it didn’t seem like there was enough of that included, at least not as much as I’d have liked. It felt more like this was a murder mystery with a touch of fantasy. The ending was also a bit cheesy. I think this book will be enjoyed by the right audience – that just wasn’t me.

I was surprised on how much I liked this book! It is a rather short - only 250 some pages. This makes it a quick read but still enjoyable. I like the world building! Its magical realism done in a way I like. Magic is part of the world, something you can study or apprentice in. Tabatha is a likeable, possibly unreliable character thrown into an intriguing mystery when her prophetic boss predicts his death by murder. There is an array of people who could've done it, most of them related to said victim. Tabatha is tasked with staying close to Callum, the son of the deceased. Everything goes haywire when Tabatha is named the magical heir to Sorcerer Solomons estate. With this novel being so quick, I was worried about plot and characters, but they were solid. The plot held they mystery pretty well, but by the end it felt right on hoe the murder happened. The romance was light but effective and enjoyable. I liked Callum and Tabatha together. All in all, I enjoyed this quick, fun read!

something for everyone

This amazing new book (from the author of House of Hollow) will be on the shelves in January 2024. It's got something for everyone: it's a thriller, it's fantasy, it's horror...there are witches, there are demons, and there are strong female characters. The world building was right on point, definitely not formulaic but also sufficiently explained that I didn't have any trouble buying into it. The writing style was absorbing and set a fast pace. The atmosphere is creepy and dark, and readers should be warned that it's pretty gruesome at times; there's lots of body horror and violence against women. But the plot is tight with great twists, and there's even some humor. The characters are fantastic. They are flawed--and therefore relatable--and they continue to develop throughout the book. I want to meet up with them again in another book!

Light YA contemporary fantasy/mystery

These Deadly Prophecies is a contemporary YA fantasy and mystery. The story follows Tabatha Zeng, a high school student who is the apprentice of a renowned fortune telling sorcerer from an old and wealthy magical family. Her mentor is brutally murdered, and Tabatha becomes a suspect since she is one of the last people to see him alive. She finds herself attempting to solve the mystery by teaming up with the sorcerer's youngest son, Callum. I really liked the idea of a world in which sorcery is another career path and magic has been integrated into society, however the world building was weak, and the magic system was not explained. The pacing at times could be very slow with a lot of internal monologues and telling rather than showing. The pace picked up in the last 25% with a good twist at the end. The tone was light and fun and will likely appeal to younger YA readers.

Decent Read

Tabatha Zeng didn't realize that being an apprentice to one of the most famous sorcerers would include solving crime. But when her boss, Sorcerer Solomon, predicts his own death - and it comes true - Tabatha finds herself caught in the middle. Callum Solomon, her boss's youngest son is the main suspect the police have their sights set on. With suspicion swirling around both Callum and Tabatha, the pair decide to team up and find the real killer to clear their own names. However, when the suspect list is filled with the most rich, connected, and magical members of Sorcerer Solomon's family, solving a murder isn't that easy. And Tabatha can't ignore the nagging voice in her head asking how much she can really trust Callum. Nothing is as it seems in this quick-witted and fantastical murder mystery. I was a little nervous about this one at first because I don't usually enjoy the fantasy genre but figured I would give it a try since it had a mystery aspect to it. I was happily surprised at how much I enjoyed it. The suspense was good and had decent twists & turns.
