Book Synopsis

Perfect for fans of The Umbrella and Lizzy and the Cloud, this striking story from debut author-illustrator Danielle Ridolfi explores the beauty of the natural world, while also showing readers that big feelings--like a scary thunderstorm--will come and go.

With a stirring narrative and remarkable collage artwork, When the Dark Clouds Come draws on the lessons of the natural world to assure readers that, although tough times and difficult emotions may appear suddenly like a stormy sky, the sun is never far behind. Drawing on her background in clinical psychology, Danielle Ridolfi utilizes color shifts, sprawling landscapes, and lyrical text to show readers the beauty and relatability of nature.

When the Dark Clouds Come is ideal for reading aloud and is a book kids and caregivers will turn to again and again for comfort.

Review Quotes

"Powerful. This is a masterly marriage of text and illustration that doubles as an SEL read, as well as a more literal interpretation of the fear that comes with a dark, stormy night. Highly recommended." - School Library Journal (starred review)

"A visually rich and emotionally grounded picture book that finds beauty and solace in life's inevitable tempests."

- The Horn Book

Beautiful Illustations / Thriving Thru Big Storms of Life

Beautiful, thoughtful, artful illustrations. Done in a very unique collage-type style. A story for both Children and Adults about a big thunderstorm and thriving in and through the big emotions of life. Great for discussing in families, reading aloud in classrooms, discussing with a book club, or to use in counseling (kids or adults). Lovely, enchanting book all the way around.
