Q: Is this the full story, or is the board book a shortened version of the actual story?

submitted by Potato - 10 months ago

  • A: After a discussion and research on Amazon, I believe it’s a short version. It is only 12 pages while the hard cover is 32 pages. Maybe because it’s a board book instead?

Destructive

Horrible. Promotes self sacrifice and the destruction of healthy bodily boundaries in children.

Poor quality

Thin, flimsy and cheaply made. The print is too small and thin to read clearly.

Horrible Story & Message

I really remembered this book differently from my childhood but when I finally read it before reading it to my childhood, I was flabbergasted at how absolutely dumb this story is. “Give your scales away so that other fish like you” is the premise. I thought the storyline was more like “you’re different and that’s ok, learn to love yourself”. The condition of the physical board book itself is great! But the story made me SMH. Returning this.

not the original

this is a shortened version and detracts from the storyline. as is, it basically says change to be accepted by others. find the original to read to your child.

One of the best childrens books!

This was one of my favorite books when I was young. Now I can read it to my babies and they absolutely love it! This will be a forever favorite!

Used to love the hardcover book as a kid

shortened version doesn't flow well and seems to twist the original intent of the book

bad moral

This is a book with an unfortunate message - give away everything that makes you you/beautiful in order to have friends. Why can't the friends admire and embrace the fish without literally having to hold/have/own a part of it? the illustrations are beautiful; the message is wrong.

Not a good message

Like many others I didn’t like the message. You don’t need to give people your things so they can be your friend. Sharing is different, this is not about sharing. I don’t suggest buying.

This is NOT a good kids book. Yuck.

Learning to share is an important life lesson, but this story is not the way to teach it - it’s confusing and makes it sound like your child needs to dumb themselves down to fit in. This is an awful message for kids. Please remove this book.
