Book Synopsis

For readers of Christopher McDougall's Born to Run and Haruki Murakami's What I Talk About When I Talk About Running, Emmy-winning broadcaster Toni Reavis draws on five decades inside distance running--from the first running boom and history's greatest marathon duels to Boston Strong and today's global running culture--to reveal how the sport became a source of identity, healing, community, defiance, and meaning.

Running seems absurd. Day after day, runners push themselves to exhaustion. On race day, they often pay for the agony, er . . . privilege. Every morning, afternoon, and evening run expires. And like a self-torturing Sisyphus, a runner volunteers to do it again. Why?

Emmy Award-winning broadcaster Toni Reavis has covered running for a half-century. In Why We Run, he draws on his own experience, hundreds of hours of archival recordings, and decades of conversations with champions and everyday athletes for an inspiring cultural history and philosophical inquiry into the bond between movement and the human spirit.

Reavis traces running from our evolutionary beginnings through Frank Shorter's 1972 Olympic victory, the rise of Bill Rodgers and the mass running movement, Joan Benoit Samuelson's Olympic triumph, East African ascendancy, and today's run-club culture. Along the way, he captures iconic races and intimate moments with Kathrine Switzer, Alberto Salazar, Dick Beardsley, Meb Keflezighi, Haile Gebrselassie, Wilson Kipsang, and others. And he explores how running helps ordinary people endure grief, build friendships, reclaim communities, and discover reserves of courage.

Why We Run reveals that running's greatest rewards are belonging and the resolve to push through life's greatest distances.

Review Quotes

"More than a chronicle of races and runners. Toni understands something essential: running is open to everyone, yet it asks something profound of all who commit to it. He captures both the accessibility and the gravity of the sport--how a simple act like putting one foot in front of the other can shape identity, forge community, and offer a lens for understanding ourselves and our world."
--from the foreword by Joan Benoit Samuelson, 1984 Olympic Marathon Gold Medalist and author of Running Tide

"Toni Reavis has been one of running's preeminent journalists for five decades, but his curiosity and fierce intellect drive him beyond personalities and events--he seeks meaning. . . . You'll enjoy Why We Run for its familiar stories--but you'll remember Reavis's richly detailed book for revealing the deep significance in the simple act of running."
--Amby Burfoot, 1968 Boston Marathon champion and author of The Runner's Guide to the Meaning of Life

"Part memoir, part history, and part cultural manifesto, he brings to life the personalities and events that have made running a global movement for the masses. A natural storyteller, Reavis has written a must-read book for anyone who has run a mile or a marathon."
--George A. Hirsch, Chairman Emeritus, New York Road Runners; cofounder, New York City Marathon

"Toni has always expressed the most poignant point of view about our sport. . . . He doesn't just document running--he shares a uniquely heartfelt and sweeping testament to the power of movement."
--Bill Rodgers, four-time Boston and New York City Marathon champion

"Like the great raconteur he is, Toni Reavis weaves memories, races, and personalities into a vivid tapestry that unfurls to reveal the true heart of the sport."
--Kathrine Switzer, author of Marathon Woman and cofounder of 261 Fearless

"Toni Reavis bridges generations of runners with a perspective that is both profound and personal, bringing the sport's history to life. His insights make you think more deeply about running--and appreciate even more the community we all love."
--Meb Keflezighi, Olympic medalist and Boston and New York City Marathon champion
