Book Synopsis

Wall-E meets Hatchet in this New York Times bestselling illustrated middle grade novel from Caldecott Honor winner Peter Brown

Can a robot survive in the wilderness?

When robot Roz opens her eyes for the first time, she discovers that she is all alone on a remote, wild island. She has no idea how she got there or what her purpose is--but she knows she needs to survive. After battling a violent storm and escaping a vicious bear attack, she realizes that her only hope for survival is to adapt to her surroundings and learn from the island's unwelcoming animal inhabitants.

As Roz slowly befriends the animals, the island starts to feel like home--until, one day, the robot's mysterious past comes back to haunt her.

From bestselling and award-winning author and illustrator Peter Brown comes a heartwarming and action-packed novel about what happens when nature and technology collide.

My 3rd grade daughter says this is the best book she has ever read. Her teacher read it to the class and she begged for a copy at home.

At the start of the pandemic, when my son was 6.5, he didn't want to read or be read to. I had tried different things, but he wasn't interested until a few months ago when I stumbled on this book. He likes to follow hurricanes and the scene in the beginning hooked him. As did the robot MC and the setting in the future, and among other things. I have to credit this book for getting him out of a reading slump. This review is based on my 8yo enjoying this story.

I have a reluctant third grade reader and this book was one he actually enjoyed reading every night. At first he was intimidated by the number of pages but the chapters are short and the story is engaging and full of adventure. I highly recommend for all ages.
