These tables commonly use solid woods (for frames and legs) such as solid wood or rubberwood, plus veneered tops (maple veneer, oak veneer, mindy veneer) over engineered cores. Composite/engineered materials like MDF and other engineered wood are also used, and some pieces combine solid frames with veneered tabletops.

Common mechanisms include hinged drop leaves (fold-down leaves attached to the tabletop), butterfly leaves (folding leaves that fold and tuck inside the table), and separate extension leaves where the table pulls apart to accept a drop-in or extension leaf.

Shown leaf sizes include two 9" drop leaves, two 8" drop leaves, and an 18" extension (butterfly or separate leaf). In practice, leaves commonly add about 8–18 inches of depth or overall length depending on the design.

Most models support two people in their compact form and up to four when opened; some listings note seating for four to six when fully extended.
