Most dog cooling bandanas and towels activate by wetting and removing excess water: soak the item, wring out the excess, and put it on the dog. Some evaporative cooling towels are also snapped a few times after wetting to start the evaporative cooling effect.

Super-absorbent drying towels are high-GSM microfiber built to soak up and hold water (example: a 1500 GSM towel can absorb up to 8× its weight and dries faster than cotton). Evaporative cooling towels use breathable microfiber or mesh and are wetted (and sometimes snapped) so evaporation produces a cooling effect.
