Some kennels arrive ready-to-use, but many require adult assembly with tools; manufacturers often promote quick or intuitive assembly. Furniture-style crates may include mobility aids such as universal wheels or locking casters for easier relocation.

Security features include reinforced locking gates, multi-point or rotating anti-escape lock systems, additional reinforced locks, and one-hand operable or reinforced latches to reduce escape attempts.

Some kennels include rotating or swivel stainless-steel feeders that allow refilling without opening the main door, along with one-hand operable door locks or easy-to-use latches for quick access.
