Gel pen packs range from single-color (often black) options to multicolor assortments and commonly include colors such as green, black, pink, purple, orange, blue, red, brown and other assorted multicolors.

Common comfort features include rubber grips, contoured rubber grips, and full-length soft grips designed to support extended writing.

Many gel pens use retractable click mechanisms; some retractable models also include a built-in eraser at the top of the pen.

A few gel pens use renewable or reclaimed barrel materials (for example, wheat straw), and some note packaging printed on FSC-certified paper using soy-based ink.
