Most diverters and kits are made to fit the common residential downspout sizes: 2-by-3 inches and 3-by-4 inches.

Kits commonly include the diverter body plus installation items such as a hole saw, a fill or connection hose, mounting screws or grommets, and sometimes a winter hole cover or a flexible fitting.

Splash block sizes vary by model to suit different runoff areas. Examples from these items include about 5 in. high × 21 in. wide × 8 in. deep and other shapes around 2 in. high × 11.25 in. wide × 24.25 in. deep.

Some models include built-in debris screens or mesh inserts to block leaves and reduce clogs, and designs with lift-off covers let you access and remove debris without tools for easier maintenance.

When a barrel is full, excess water is routed back through the diverter and returned to the downspout so the system remains closed and overflow is controlled.
