Mesh or perforated steel tops allow steam and heat to pass through the ironing surface instead of pooling beneath it. That improves steam circulation and helps moisture escape, which can enhance steaming performance and reduce damp spots on garments compared with solid-top boards.

Ironing surfaces for over-the-door boards generally range from about 30 to 50 inches long and 12 to 19 inches wide. Dedicated over-the-door boards most commonly measure around 41–50 inches long and 14–17 inches wide, while smaller tabletop or steam-pad options fall at the lower end of those ranges.
