Velvet tufted beds typically pair velvet upholstery with foam padding (sometimes called sponge). Frames are usually wood or metal and the mattress is supported by wooden slats mounted to the frame.

Many velvet platform beds are designed for mattresses about 8 to 15 inches thick (some adjustable models specify 8–12 inches). Most platform models state that a box spring is not required.

To reduce noise and improve stability, velvet tufted beds often include EVA or foam strips and other sound-absorbing materials, noise-reducing foot pads, reinforced framing, and center support legs.

Common decorative styles include vertical channel tufting and deep button tufting. Many listings also pair tufting with decorative metal nailhead trim.

Platform velvet beds commonly use solid wooden slats—many list 12 slats—mounted on metal or reinforced frames. Center support legs are often included to increase stability.

Under-bed clearance is generally modest—commonly about 4.9" to 6.3"—suitable for low-profile storage bins and, in some cases, robot vacuum access.
