R6 MK II Refurbished Upgrade

After ordering this refurbished R6 MK II body, I instantly knew how much of an upgrade it was from the first gen R6. The accessibility features are next level. It did take using it a few time to adjust to some changes that were made from the first gen. If you’re on the fence about upgrading or purchasing refurbished do it. You still get a quality product at a great price!

Recommended but some things to watch out for

The best camera for my situation, mainly kid's events between concerts, school events, sports, etc. The 24MP is perfect for these types of events since you need to shoot fast to capture the moment. Any higher and the SD cards wouldn't be able to keep up. Plus, why would you need more than 24MP? 24MP is huge can be printed poster size! Need to crop without losing MP? I learned to shoot better to avoid cropping. For those complaining about lock ups. I learned the hard way that the battery matters....a lot. The LP-E6NH that comes with it is a must, don't try to use your older batteries. If you need more batteries (recommended), the NH is becoming scarce, the LP-E6P designed for the R5mii works with a firmware update. No more lockups once I got the right batteries. Why? The newer bodies Canon is coming out with requires more power. The lockups can occur if you push the camera too far/fast and it simply doesn't have enough juice to do the tasks. As for autofocus issues, probably a settings issue. I've not had an issue with it so far and have shot thousands of photos of volleyball and other slower moving events. I had to pay special attention to the autofocus AI settings with subject detection. Back to battery, SD cards, and lock ups. If you don't have the right battery AND a fast enough SD card, you can lock up the R6mii. I had to upgrade to a V90 SD card capable of 300 MB/s to keep up with the burst shots. I tested this with an older battery vs an NH or P, the R6mii will turn your H+ drive mode green when you have the right battery/power to use this feature, meaning if you are low on battery with an NH or P battery, it won't reach full potential. It's the difference in around 7fps vs 40fps or a lock up. The one thing I wish this camera had: CFexpress. The burst mode is borderline too fast for SD cards. Lastly, coming from an 80D, this is a huge improvement. Love this camera and just know that it will amaze every time I pick it up. Hope this helps those shopping!

Focusing Nightmare! Wedding photographer beware!

THE FOCUS IS AWFUL!!!! I recently upgraded to the Mark II, expecting enhanced performance for my wedding photography. Unfortunately, the autofocus was severely disappointing. As a wedding photographer, capturing fleeting moments is crucial, especially during ceremonies, and the Mark II's inconsistent focus caused me to miss key shots. This experience forced me to switch back to my reliable R6, which has consistently delivered the sharp, accurate focus I need. For anyone relying on precise autofocus in fast-paced wedding settings, I recommend sticking with the classic R6 until the Mark II's issues are resolved.

Disappointed in the packaging, I thought it would at least come in a similar box. Its a great deal but I was giving it as a gift, so I would think canon would be able to find the same box the camera came in not another model.

Would NOT recommend for wedding photographers

I’ve used this camera for about a year, including one full wedding season, and unfortunately, I can’t recommend it. While the image quality is solid and the autofocus is a noticeable improvement over my Mark IV, the camera’s reliability leaves much to be desired. It crashes constantly, which has been incredibly frustrating. I used the Mark IV for five years without experiencing any similar issues, so I’m particularly disappointed that Canon released a product with such glaring flaws. I’ve given it 2 stars solely for the image quality and autofocus improvements, but the reliability problems make it hard to justify this camera for demanding situations like weddings.

the R6ii is great camera body to use with strobes. I shoot HS teams with a 4-5 light setup. Pairing with my gear was pretty easy, and I was able to tweak the viewfinder so as to not experience blackout. Also tethers easily to Lightroom. Pretty happy with it overall, and colors straight out of camera look great!

I don’t miss my R5. This is a great camera!

My R5 was stolen so I got the R6 mk2 and I wasn’t sure I could live with the 24 megapixels. As it turns out there are several things I like about it more than my R5. I shot some images at 25600 iso and I was amazed at how clean and usable the images were (when exposed correctly). In my estimation the R6MK2 is about a full stop better when it comes to shooting high ISO. I also think the dynamic range is slightly better. It has the same autofocus system as the R3 and it is better than the already great R5. The raw burst mode is pretty cool as it packs kind of like the pre shooting mode on the R5 mk2 (although it is a bit more cumbersome). The 40 frames per second shooting speed is ridiculously good and I don’t hit the buffer that often. I have only been shooting in electronic shutter mode and the rolling shutter is very minimal (I actually haven’t noticed at all) and it’s better than my R5. I don’t shoot much video but I can say that it’s nice to not have a 30 minute maximum time limit of continuous video shooting. There isn’t an over heating issue either. I’ve read and been told that the 6k over sampling is better than the 8k of the R5 but again I’m not much of a video shooter. There are many other smaller features that the R5 doesn’t have as well. Overall the only drawback is the 24 megapixel sensor not being a 45 megapixel sensor. But I have tried some heavy cropping to test it and I was very pleasantly surprised at the detail I got. Plus if you have Gigapixel you can upsize cropped images. So ultimately I honestly like it better than my R5… that is strange to say but it really is an amazing camera especially for the price.

Most practical camera body

Long-time Canon user - 35mm SLR from 1968, APS-C DSLRs since 2005, R7 since 2022. Just added the R6 for better low-light performance and more reliable autofocus. Keeping the R7 for hiking and as a daytime teleconverter, but the 1/3 reduction in megapixels is well outweighed by the ability to shoot at higher ISOs. The two identical v90 SDXC card slots allow shooting a real-time backup, something that the models with one CF card slots can't do. Get one of those if you're a sports or high-spec video shooter, but the R6 is the sweet spot for the generalist photographer.

Great camera! This thing is a workhorse indeed. Still trying to figure out the astro applications it has but the IBIS is phenomenal and the FPS is insane. I can handhold a 1200mm lens and get decent sharpness from this when combined with lens stabilization. It's amazing. I use this with Sigma lenses and they DID need a firmware update for things to work properly. You may notice a noise when the camera is off and it shakes, this is normal.. no worries. The build is solid and has plenty of accessories like the grip, which is expensive and probably a little over priced, but very useful. UHS II, V90 cards work best but V60 will be fine, it'll just slow your write speed down and will hinder your overall max number of frames when doing bursts. Anything less will not allow you to do what you expect of it.

Crashes when switching from photo to video settings, don’t do this during a wedding ceremony or you’ll be in trouble… yes this did happen to me and luckily removing the battery and reinstalling saved me in time. Battery lasts longer, auto focus is great. Buttons have been switched around and I hate it actually. Wish they had just left the buttons the same at the r5 and r6… big issue for me. Ultimately the crashing is bad news if you are a wedding photographer and videographer like myself. I have my back ups and don’t switch settings in situations like ceremony with this camera anymore. Wish I could exchange for or get a refund..

The image quality is outstanding. The high burst rate is useful only at times. There's a little problem with hummingbirds and ducks with fast wings with the Electronic Shutter. The IBIS is doubtful. I'm having a little trouble with EF lenses and pointing straight down. I'm only getting 3 stops at best. Not quite enough sensor pixels for a lot of cropping. Overall, I'd say I really like it though. I just have to be aware of the limitations.

It is a nice camera. However after looking at several videos I still can't figure out how to get the focus points set for how I need to use it for shooting sports. I want a fixed focus point that will stay fixed until I move it. The manual hasn't been helpful at all. I need it to be like my 7D for focusing.
