About the Author
Pierce Freelon is an accomplished musician, producer, and educator from Durham, North Carolina. He is the co-creator of Beat Making Lab, an Emmy Award-winning PBS web series and is the writer, composer and co-director of the PBS animated series The History of White People in America, an official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival. His Grammy-nominated children's music has been featured on The Today Show, NPR and MSNBC, as well as in Rolling Stone. Based in Washington, DC, Nadia Fisher is a self-taught artist and illustrator striving to normalize inclusion in children's books and the illustration world. She wants children from all backgrounds to be able to see themselves in the books they read, and she strives to instill a sense of confidence and joy in them as well. Daddy & Me, Side by Side is a beautifully illustrated remembrance of a loved one, while recreating special time spent with that person. I love the bond between the father and son as they trek through the wilderness and quietly grieve Pop-Pop. Encourages discussions of family, loss, and outdoor activities.

This lovely story was a hit with my outdoor-loving kids! They loved the father and son hiking together, having special parent-child time. The nature illustrations are vibrant and encourage readers to want to get outside themselves. The story and art together show the strong bond between the characters and the love of father to son. Sometimes nature's brilliance and silence can encourage us to open up about our feelings or to reflect on our own lives, and this happens here when our young narrator shares he misses his late grandfather, who also used to hike in the same woods with the father when he was a boy. A winner for Father's Day or as a gift for nature-loving kids.
