About this item

Description

An Oprah’s Book Club Selection

"Demon is a voice for the ages—akin to Huck Finn or Holden Caulfield—only even more resilient. I’m crazy about this book, which parses the epidemic in a beautiful and intimate new way. I think it’s her best.” —Beth Macy, author of Dopesick

“An Appalachian David Copperfield...Demon Copperhead reimagines Dickens’s story in a modern-day rural America contending with poverty and opioid addiction...Like Dickens, she is unblushingly political and works on a sprawling scale...Episode by episode she persuasively conveys the mind of a teenage boy…It’s hard to think of another living novelist who could take a stab at Dickens and rise above the level of catastrophe.” —New York Times

From the New York Times bestselling author of Unsheltered and Flight Behavior, a brilliant novel which enthralls, compels, and captures the heart as it evokes a young hero’s unforgettable journey to maturity.

“Anyone will tell you the born of this world are marked from the get-out, win or lose.”

Demon Copperhead is set in the mountains of southern Appalachia. It’s the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. In a plot that never pauses for breath, relayed in his own unsparing voice, he braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses. Through all of it, he reckons with his own invisibility in a popular culture where even the superheroes have abandoned rural people in favor of cities.

Many generations ago, Charles Dickens wrote David Copperfield from his experience as a survivor of institutional poverty and its damages to children in his society. Those problems have yet to be solved in ours. Dickens is not a prerequisite for readers of this novel, but he provided its inspiration. In transposing a Victorian epic novel to the contemporary American South, Barbara Kingsolver enlists Dickens’ anger and compassion, and above all, his faith in the transformative powers of a good story. Demon Copperhead speaks for a new generation of lost boys, and all those born into beautiful, cursed places they can’t imagine leaving behind.

Wanted to love it...

I had such high hopes for this one since most of the ratings were 5 stars. The beginning had me hooked & Damon's voice had me captivated, the middle drug on & I felt was so repetitive, & then BOOM! The ending, where I finally started to feel intrigued again, was over in 2 seconds! I wanted to trade in half of the book for more ending. The ending was incredibly rushed. The book is kind of a modern take on David Copperfield. I did feel connected to some of the characters & the main character, Damon. And just kept rooting for his success every step of the way, when he was being dealt every bad hand throughout his entire childhood. The story is told through the perspective of someone looking back on their memories. Through the eyes of a child, you learn of the world in Appalachia during the opioid crisis. Although the book is a retelling of David Copperfield, it remains its own unique coming of age story. We are along side Damon as he confronts grief, growing up in the foster care system, addiction, & the concept of family (that tends to look very different for him). Overall the author's flow of writing was great, but definitely felt instead of being 546 pages, it could have been a lot shorter.

I've bought a lot of books this year, but this has by far been the best. We dive deep into a young man's life in a beautifully written parallel to David Copperfield. It's easy to care about Demon and to feel invested in his story, and to look deeper into the perils of a very multi-layered and broken system. I think it's definitely worth reading!!

This modern day interpretation of David Copperfield is well worth reading. It's a pretty realistic depiction of what happens to kids whose parents can't care for them properly of a single women who have to work and be a parent and deal with their own emotional instability.

Every book I have read of hers is highly entertaining and also inspires the reader to want to go out and champion a social movement. In this case, the opioid problem in America.

Gritty and beautiful. This novel gives a view of poverty and the opioid epidemic through the eyes of a young man reflecting back on his childhood and teenage years. Kingsolver’s prose is lovely, but unflinching. Wry humor and Demon’s resilience keep it from being bleak, but this is definitely not a novel for the faint of heart.
